Book Review: Milk and Cookie a Little Spooky by Maritza Oliver

This book is extremely bright and visually appealing with beautiful cartoon-like illustrations.  At first glance it looks like a young children's book but it is full of information about the dairy industry and I would highly recommend this book for pre-teen, teens and the adult that is just starting to gain interest in veganism. It is packed with information.I love that the purpose of the book is to raise awareness of dairy consumption for the next generation. I think it is so important. Compassion needs to start now.It starts out talking about the cow, her connection with her calf, and the bond that they create if allowed. It has a loving emphasis on Moms and their roles as moms no matter what species.Being a mother, nursing is hard work for the body. Creating sustenance for your child is an amazing miracle that your body creates. I think it is so important to read about how this happens and think about the insane controversy about moms who are in the world feeding their babies breast milk because it is a loving act we are often criticizing moms for. Then we milk a cow and openly drink her milk. Hypocricy anyone?Maritza's sub heading: Our surrogate mother for centuries, really hits the nail on the head.  Do you ever feel duped by campaigns and advertising? Well the milk industry is no different and she talked about that myth of milk. Most of us wish to be kind, loving and compassionate people. We would never dehorn, brand, or castrate without anesthetics our pets so why would it be comfortable for a cow or bull?  She talks about these issues and more. This book is an eye opening saga of the life of the dairy cow. However, the images are not graphic in the sense of disgusting to look at. They show the emotion in a more whimsical way.She leaves you with a message of hope: Awakening Compassion. You can purchase her book here.We interviewed the author and you can read that here. From our Family to yours,Jennifer, Chef Barry, Jayden, Adeline
