Drugged up Cow, boys!

I was reading an article that appeared on the Yahoo news page last week titled "Pressure rises to stop antibiotics in agriculture". Now to me this isn't a startling headline. Antibiotics are heavily used in today's factory farm system. Just think. When you have thousands of creatures, whether they are pigs, cows or chickens, crammed into the smallest possible situations, defecating on one another and standing in it all day, your bound to get a little sick. Germs and bacterias are in full strength and the animals are in the middle, getting sick and causing contamination to the environment and themselves. It is no wonder that farmers pump them full of medicine and antibiotics, usually even before they are sick or show signs of sickness.

Where do these antibiotics end up? Some pollution is the result, partly by feces and feedlot run-off. Which in turn, ends up in our water supply, contaminating it and then unknown, innocent victims consume this water. Or those that eat the meat from these animals directly ingest the poisons and later have undetermined health problems that may or may not have been a result of this. Then there is the unsuspecting farmer that unintentionally contracts a super virus from his/her livestock. A virus that has grown to withstand typical vaccinations and now are more lethal than ever before.

This is a problem. A big problem. Not only for those that eat the animals, but also those who raise them and those that live in the community. Check out the article and let me know how you feel. I think we cannot support such practices. Drugs are too easily available and are nearly always abused. By eating a conscience, whole food, vegan, organic diet we can stop such practices. Help us all.

Enjoy.
