Surviving the Holidays
I hope everyone had a very satisfying weekend. I know we did. My wife and I went to our friend Emily's mother's house and had a fabulous dinner. We knew that they would help cater to our vegan diet, so things were not all too stressful as we prepared to go. They had made separate vegan stuffing and green beans. Additionally Emily combined a couple of recipes and created gluten free rolls for my wife. How thoughtful! She appreciated this very much. I brought a leek broth that we garnished with roasted potatoes and an experimental pie, Meyer-lemon curd with coconut "whipped cream." Man, it rocked!
Being invited to a dinner, or lunch for that matter, can become an anxious event. Not knowing if there will be anything to eat, I always eat ahead. This allows for us not to starve and still be comfortable and enjoy the company. I always bring a dish and a dessert if the mood or occasion calls for it. When bringing a dish bring enough for everyone, plus a little more. There is no doubt that it will, at least, be tasted by everyone and if it is good, probably seconds. Dessert on the other hand, make enough for everyone and make sure you get a serving. A good host will ensure you get the first serving, though.
There is nothing like being offended by your peers for the decisions you choose to make. Likewise, do not offend your host or others by commenting on their choices. "Do Unto Others" is still good advice to live by. Seeing anyone get on their soap box at a dinner party or any other event can be rather annoying. So, please, do not be that person! If you think you have to, maybe just stay home. The holidays are about being with the ones you love and enjoying each others company. With that said, smile, compliment and be merry.
All this advice may come a little late for the Thanksgiving Holiday, but I hope the remainder of the year's festivities are stress-free and fulfilling. Please have safe holiday season.
Enjoy.
