Just Released: New Vegan Children's Book
This is a guest post today from vegan children's book author Maritza Oliver. Her first book, Milk and Cookie a Little Spooky, for children 8 and up and adults of all ages is now available on Amazon.Milk and Cookie a Little Spooky seeks to raise awareness of dairy consumption for the next generations by taking a critical look at the dairy industry through vivid and whimsical illustrations. It shines a light on the unique connection between female mammals, both humans and non-humans, and their milk. Using an approach based on common sense and healthy choices, it advocates the cow’s right to do what’s natural for her –nurture her baby; promotes empathy, and emphasizes the overall benefits of a more compassionate, dairy-free lifestyle. My PhilosophyI want to speak to the reader like a friend who isn’t afraid to tell the truth. My arguments are backed up by studies, and there is no technical talk, as I want to make my points easily digested and heartfelt, without shaming readers. I explain in simple language how dairy cows are used for food and how that use harms cows, humans and the planet. The illustrations are a huge part of the book. They are true to life in depicting the horrors of what we do to dairy cows but also gently presented—I was careful to not make them too graphic. The text portions are bite-sized and very straightforward rather than going out of their way to entertain. While the subject matter of the book is serious, I employ a gentle and sometimes humorous approach to convey information in a useful and palatable manner. My GoalThe importance of reaching out to children cannot be overemphasized. We mustn’t any longer wait for children to become “adults” and then leave it to their “choice.” To do what? To undo the process of indoctrination and socialization? In my books, I want to show people the bottom up approach, because children are more open-minded, inherently compassionate and receptive to ideas. We need to empower them with the right for their choices at an early age. Only empowered children can save humanity from the massive ethical crisis we are witnessing. My first book Milk and Cookie provides an amazing opportunity for all parents to respect the wisdom and kindness of their children.BioMaritza Oliver is an author-illustrator and activist living in British Columbia.
