Busy as a Bee Earns New Meaning
Life has been in an exciting yet terrifying state as we at Local Love Catering work really hard to establish a bricks and mortar location for Local Love Catering and change our name to Sanctuary Bistro. Transition is always hard. We are passionate about creating gourmet, health food for the planet, the animals and YOU.
Doesn’t everyone need a sign that it’s all going to be fine...?
One week ago, we got our sign. Chef Barry looked out into our back yard and… “Whoa, there are so many bugs.” I am sorry to say, I yelled, “IT’S THE PLAGUE!” Thousands of bees had invaded our backyard, swarming and buzzing.
Can you see why i said that from this picture.
Since the episode, I’ve learned a lot about bees, but I was obviously very concerned - I can’t let the kids and the pets outside while this is there.
We thought it would be best to let the bees settle and I sat down and did some research. Bees are majestic and amazing. I began to discover the symbolism behind seeing a bee.
According to Witch School International,
“If a bee (or a full hive) shows up in your life you may want to ask yourself the following:
Are you being productive enough?
Are you taking time to enjoy life or are you being a workaholic?
Are you attempting to do too much?
Do you need to work on your communication skills?
Are you able to work cooperatively with others?”
Oh, man. These are hard questions for sure. They are the questions you have to continually assess and ask yourself throughout life, and especially when working on a new project. Maintaining momentum can be so difficult, but so is knowing when to slow down. Balance seems incredible however, balance must be created to be able to create delicious food. When you create food from love, the food includes the essence of love.
Bees in Mythology
According to this article on bee honey,
“As the workers of the hive, bees are (a) symbol of an industrious and prosperous community governed by the queen bee.”
Did I tell you that I am going to be the CEO of Sanctuary Bistro? Can I be as efficient as the queen bee? She has created a scenario where the other bees want to work for her.
The bees began to settle down and create a swarm about the size of a soccer ball on a low hanging branch. It was a sight to see. They were all working together to protect the Queen and each other. We learned bees gorge themselves with honey from the hive and are able to sustain themselves for three days. They will usually find a new location within a few hours to a few days.
So we waited. It was chilly and even colder at night; you know the foggy, cold summer days in the Bay Area. Day Three came and they didn’t leave so we began our search for bee keepers. Bees are important to the environment and the cold is difficult for them outside of the hive. We figured they needed help finding a home and we hoped it wouldn’t be our backyard. We found a bee keeper that has hives on her property to pollinate her fruit trees.
“The Bee is the symbol of accomplishing the impossible.
Aerodynamically, its body is too large for its wings and should not be able to fly. Although, now we understand how it does fly (high rate of wing movement), the Bee remains a symbol of accomplishing anything you put your mind to.”
I can do this.
Chef Barry makes incredible food. We have the background and the knowledge and the drive and now we have the bees. While talking with the beekeeper, she told me that all the bees in the swarm were female. From the feminist standpoint, I thought that was rad!
The women held it together.
They held together the family, the work and production!
We looked at how the bees communicate. There were bees speaking to the other bees… “Hey girls, the Queen is in here. Abdomen up in the air…. Then other bees would come up and ask, “Is this true?’ Once confirmed, they would follow the other bees into the new hive. Wow.
You can see a bee in the left corner of the hive box with his abdomen in the air. He is telling the other bees that the queen is inside. You can also see the bees locking their antennas, they are communicating to each other. The communication is a powerful and beautiful connection to the intelligence of the bees.
Don’t Kill The Bees
We need them. The bees sustain us and we must protect them. A few days later I read an article about why the bees are dying.
I realize we are doing something amazing for the bees and the environment with our work. We are voting to stop the production of pesticides. We are voting for the small farmer and his organic farming methods.
We are voting for the bees. Who and what are you voting for?
