Ashley Cousin

Medium: mixed media painter

As a fine artist, in the Bay Area, I seek to find opportunities to translate life experiences into art. From a young age, I was drawn to expressing myself through color and art, and was fortunate to study in one of the most beautiful places. In 2008, I earned a BA in Art at University of Hawaii at Manoa, where my passion for artistic creativity flourished and allowed me to develop my personal style. My abstract style is inspired by fashion, music, vibrant color, and eccentricity. Using expressionism of painting itself, with vinyl records as a canvas and mixed media art to experiment has evolved into my unique style.

What is the inspiration behind the work?
The feeling I get when I paint that lets me let go of anything I want to be free of is inspiring. Getting lost in the painting inspires me to continue to create.

Is there a piece that you have created that you are most proud of?
Yes a series I did while attending the University of Hawaii which focused on body parts. I repeated images and had an abstract piece with more meaning then some other works I have done.

Do you believe that art sparks conversation?
Absolutely. It’s in the eye of the beholder and ones interpretation can be very different from another’s. I love when people see things I don’t necessarily see in my work. I love hearing other people’s emotional reaction to my pieces.

What led you to become an artist?
Ive always wanted to be an artist ever since I can remember. When I realized how much more art is than just the body of work I couldn’t let go. Art is therapy, it can heal those who don’t even know they need healing. It plays a major role in the subconscious as well.

What is the most exciting "thing" that has happened with your work.
One of my most exciting moments was when I got my work to be sold at a retail store. It was a very rewarding and happy feeling. I felt as if my hours of hard work are paying off!

Compassion, community, the planet, the people, animals, health and
sustainability are what drive Sanctuary Bistro.  How would you say these topics impact your work?

Instead of throwing away old records I reuse them and that lessens trash for the environment.

Where can we see more of your work?
The 2nd Friday of every month I participate in the Vallejo Art Walk in downtown Vallejo from 5:30-9pm.  The last Friday of every month is Oakland I participate in “Da Bridge’s #LastFridays” event from 9pm-2am. Da Bridge is a collective that brings together cannabis and art and music.  I have other shows to be shared via Instagram (@ashleycousinart) and on my website.

Up the Creek Record store in Walnut Creek has some of my paintings, records, and jewelry. Baygreen Salad in Walnut Creek has some of my paintings up for sale currently as well.  I also do art shows 2-3 times a month in which I share via my site and social media.

How does one purchase your work?
My website is www.ashleycousin.com and work can be purchased from there. I can be reached via email, text, call regarding any inquiries of my work.
