A Change in Life
Well it has been a little while since my last post. I had my family in town and a baby shower last week. If you haven't heard yet, we are having a baby and he is due August 16th.
With this comes a change in life, a new life for my wife, a baby and I. We don't know exactly what to expect until it happens, but we have heard it all and then some. We are ready though, as ready as anyone can be for having their first child, that is. To this point we have already had to begin making decisions that will impact our child's life for the future. We have come to the conclusion that we will stick to our beliefs and be organic, environmentally friendly, sustainable and vegan.
We are choosing to use cloth diapers. The benefits of using cloth, we feel outweigh the benefits of disposable diapers or the newer combo "flush" style disposable diapers. If you are not familiar with today's newest diapers, this diaper has an insert that is removed and flushed or thrown away once it has been soiled. We have registered with a diaper service, which once a week will pick up and drop off diapers. They launder such a large amount of diapers using minimal water which results in an eco-friendly service. For the price and the time there really wasn't a better choice, besides cotton, although it isn't organic, is a renewable resource.
It takes around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers for American babies alone, according to www.thenewparentsguide.com.
Looking into the future of food for our little one, it probably isn't that surprising that we will be making his food when the time comes. Looking on the shelves, as we do regularly now, has got us to thinking, why would anyone buy baby food? Pureed sweet potato, peas and carrots or mashed bananas? Come on, I know time will be feel limited, but the freshness and quality of the food that I want to feed my baby is the utmost important. I know that it is easy for a chef to say, but this is pureed sweet potato! For $2 or more. This is why, when the time comes and it will be here quicker than we think, I will produce large quantities of baby food that will be available for purchase. So get ready, mothers groups and daycare providers, because you will soon be able to purchase local, organically made, vegan, gourmet, pureed sweet potatoes. Until then, please buy organic and vegan!
Enjoy.
