Community Supported Agriculture

We are so excited to be supporting a local farm. This week we will begin to receive a CSA box from Terra Firma Farm. Although there are many local farms to choose, we decided to try this one from a friend's recommendation.

Why a CSA?

We like supporting the local farms as much as possible. The produce will be as fresh or fresher than any found at your local supermarket, and just as fresh as your farmer's market. It is true that you can't necessarily "choose" what will be in your box each week, but it will be fresh, organic and delicious. Plus, part of the fun is the surprise of what will exactly be in your box. Although, the produce is determined by the season, and for the most part you know what you will be getting, it is still exciting.

Well, why not go to the farmer's market and pick your produce?

We are buying into a farm and it's principles. We are actually buying a "share" of the farm, which means rain or shine we will accept the produce that we get. Today's farmers generally make good to their CSA members. Twenty years ago, it was another story, a crop would get infested with insects or a horrible storm would destroy it and the shareholders would lose out. This would bring the community together, feast or famine, they would do it together, as one.

You also get the chance to know your farm and farmer through a CSA program. The farmers are happy to see their members and encourage them to visit the farm. As consumers, our feedback is very useful for future crops. Also, when buying a box, you often times get your produce below market price. Along with your CSA box, you usually receive a list of the current produce, a note from the farmer and sometimes their favorite recipe.

I encourage everyone to look into their local CSA farms and support them. Keeping local food local and small farms in business creates a sense of community which is all but lost.
